Radical Rainbow Party!

Sparklers will follow a map to discover the end of the rainbow inside our studio.  What treasures will we find? Sparklers will have the choice to create rainbow jewelry, paintings, wands, and gold! Thanksgiving Chef Hats

Chef Hat Instructions

Supplies

-Tissue Paper

-Printer Paper

-Markers or Crayons

-Tape or Staples

-Scissors

1.) First you and your child will need to make the band of your chef hat. Take the printer paper and cut it into a long piece that can wrap around the head of your child. You may need more than one piece of printer paper to do this.

2.) Your child can then decorate the band using markers or crayons. Since this is a chef hat they can wear while helping make Thanksgiving dinner, encourage your child to draw Thanksgiving themed drawings.

3.) Take the band and wrap it around your child’s head to measure how large the band needs to be to fit. Once you have a good fit, secure the band by taping or stapling the band to keep its shape.

4.) Have your child pick out a full sheet of tissue paper in the color of their choice. Tape or staple each corner to the inside of the band. Fluff up the tissue paper so the hat is nice and poofy.

5.) The chef hat is now ready for your child to wear. Have fun cooking together!

Mayflower Boats

Mayflower Boat Instructions

Supplies

-Plastic milk jug or plastic juice container

-Utility Blade or Sharp Scissors *For adult use only

-Permanent markers or permanent paint (acrylic paint)

-Paint Smock

-Popsicle Sticks

-White printer paper

-Scissors

-Crayons

-Hot Glue Gun *For adult use only

1.) * This step is for adults* First you will need an empty plastic milk jug (gallon size is best) or plastic juice container. The plastic containers allow the boats to actually float! Using a permanent marker draw a line on the container where you will be cutting. Draw the line about 3.5 inches up from the bottom of the container. Using a utility knife or a sharp pair of scissor cut along the line. You and your child will use the bottom of the container for the boat.

2.) Have your child put on an old t-shirt or a paint smock for the next step. Your child can begin decorating the boat with permanent marker or acrylic paint. If your child wants to play with the boat in actual water, you will need a permanent material to decorate the boat. Turning the container into the Mayflower Ship can be really fun, but if your child wants to make it into a pirate ship, rainbow ship, cruise ship, etc. encourage them!

3.) Popsicle sticks and printer paper can serve as fun sails on the ship! Your child can cut and decorate the sails however they like. Have your child show you where they would like the sails to go on their ship. * This step is for adults* Using a hot glue gun glue their sails into place on the ship.

4.) Another fun step for your child is making people to be passengers on their ship. Your child can draw pilgrims (or whatever they would like) on paper using crayons and then cut out their passengers. * This step is for adults* Using a hot glue gun glue their passengers onto popsicle sticks so they are easy to move around and play with. This can also be done with Elmer’s Glue.

5.) The ship is ready to set sail in a bathtub or plastic tub! Have fun!

Snowman Soap Sculpture

Snowman Soap Sculpture Instructions

Supplies

-bar of soap that’s been ground in food processor (can be bought of our Etsy store: http://www.etsy.com/shop/SparkStarters?ref=pr_shop_more)

-water

-water bowl

-wax paper or foil

-beads

-toothpicks

-construction paper

-scissors

1.) Once your child has the ground up soap (it will look like mozzarella cheese) have them put it on a piece of wax paper or foil.

2.) Make sure you have a bowl of water next to your work station. Soap sculptures only work when you have water! Use your hands to scoop water (2-3 times) from the bowl onto your mound of soap.

3.) Begin to cup your hands around the soap and water mixture until you have a nice snowball shape. Do not be afraid to pick it up and pack it like a snowball. You will begin to see bubbles on your hands at this point. You are now ready to begin your sculpture!

4.) To make a snowman sculpture. You will need three balls of soap (small, medium, and large). Roll your balls of soap and push them together.

3.) While your sculpture is still wet, create your snowman’s face by pushing beads into the sculpture. You can also use toothpicks for arms and cut construction paper for a hat, mitten, or scarf.

4.) Once your sculpture is finished let it air dry over-night. By the next day your sculpture will be strong and dried. Guess what! You can use your soap sculpture to wash your hand if you want!

Sparklers (ages 4-9)

Paint Pioneers (Second week of October-Third week of November)
Sparklers will set out to explore and conquer unique and fun ways of using paint this session.  One week we may be using toothbrushes and combs to create paint textures or mixing food coloring into pudding to create a dessert masterpiece.  It’s all up to the Paint Pioneers to decide

This session, our Junior Sparklers classes are exploring all the different seasons. This week, we are learning about Spring time. Sparklers have the opportunity to plant flowers, garden in their gardening gloves, and water the beautiful flowers. We watched a video of Eric Carle’s, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and search around the room for food for our baby caterpillar to eat. Here are some of the projects we did:

We made baby birds (that could really fly!)
We made paper mache bird nests
We discovered the parts of a flower, then made our own
We learned how to make blotter butterflies.

We ended our fantastic summer with an incredibly fun and creative conclusion.  We had the campers close their eyes and imagine they were venturing into a forest where they see the biggest and best climbing tree of them all.  They imagine they climb the tree and look out onto a fantastical land all their own.  Campers came up with an island that was full of castles, candy, dragons, unicorns, fairies, and monkeys.  Campers made magical paper-mache wands that they then painted and decorated with ribbons and pom poms.  A unicorn and dragon were created by two teams of campers that used oil pastel to depict a magnificent dragon and a mystical unicorn.  Maps were drawn with oil pastel and watercolor resists to show what their land looked like.  Monkeys were painted individually to hang from the tree tops and well as snowing lollipops.  All in all it was a magical place the kids created this week.  We had such an incredible summer and we consider ourselves lucky to have had such wonderful, smart, and creative campers.  Thank you so very much and we hope to see everyone again next summer!  Please consider signing up for class with us this year, we are a year round program!

This past week at camp, campers were busy creating a spooky garden.  We always allow the students to vote on ideas and execute their ideas as they see fit, and they did a magnificent job this past week! They decided to create a garden that grew jack-o-lanterns (that lit up), and colorful candy. Campers also planned and executed a spooky haunted house in our garden.  The students worked hard to make bats, stuffed animal ghosts, life-size monsters, and spiders with a giant web. This group came up with some orgininal ways to create each project. Whenever I would ask them, how can we make this project? The students were full of ideas! Unfortunately, we did not have our cameras with us on Friday to capture the magic. However, there will be plenty of photos from this weeks camp to SPARK imagination!

-A fine dining restaurant complete with an oven, hibachi grill, sink, and table
-A delicious ice cream shop with plaster ice cream scoops made by the kids
-Their own little elevator
-Beautiful lamps that every camper got to make and take home (they really lit up!)
-Exotic pets that lived inside the hotel
Each child worked so incredibly hard and had so many wonderful ideas for these hotels.  They all worked together to create one of the most fun environments we have had at The Art Spark.  Another wonderful week!

“This was the best week of my life!”    “I don’t want to go home!”  “This was my favorite camp ever!”

Getting ready to pie the “bad agents!”

These were a few of the phrases heard this week at The Art Spark!  Campers transformed into super secret agents this past week. Their goal was to  mastermind a complex maze that would protect secret treasure from bad agents (Miss Emily and Miss Jacquelyn ) !

Agents created an incredible maze that had traps hidden though out to trip up the “bad agents”.  There were spiders that hung from the ceiling, a bucket of bugs that when pulled would fall on the bad agents, tricky ice patches, robots, and revolving walls.

The agents created high-tech spy gear including spy goggles, spy watches, and walkie-talkies to help them catch the bad agents!  Once the bad agents were caught on Friday, agents were allowed to pie the bad agents in the face with cool-whip pies and throw water balloons at them.  They also got to keep the secret treasure which happened to be Smarties and Ring Pops!  It was a blast to say the least!

We were blown away by the creativity and hard work these agents had to offer this week.  They had many projects to take home with them, unfortunately they could only take home the memory of their amazing maze they built!  Campers used shrinky-dinks, recyclable materials, foam, clay, oil pastels, etc. this past week.  Campers had an incredible amount of fun this week, all while SPARKING ideas and problem solving!  Thanks, agents!

Campers did not want to leave Art Spark Island when camp ended last Friday.  And honestly, who would want to?

When challenged with building a home out of materials that could be found on an island, campers found leaves outside our studio, and used them to build and decorate our home.

When campers had to think about what they would eat and drink, they knew that they would collect cocouts for coconut milk, and go fishing in the ocean! Campers used survival skills to make fishing poles to catch the fish, and built a fire to cook with.

Campers also had to think about what the landscape woud look like on Art Spark Island. They were certain it would be full of waterfalls and palm trees!

When we wondered what friends we would meet, we imagined that there would be a magical mermaid!

When campers were sad they were leaving, they documented their story of being stranded in a journal.

When camp was finished sparklers each had about 8 wonderful projects to take home.  And several large projects created as a team.  They learned techniques such as plaster molding, marbling paper, creating a map with clay, and so much more.  Questions were asked, answers were learned, and imagination was ignited.

This past week, the Art Spark studio was transformed into a magical fairy tale world for our Once Upon a Time Camp!  We began our camp by talking about familiar fairy tales and their different elements: beginning, setting, heroine, villain, minor characters, problem, solution, and ending. To plan and write our own fairy tale we asked questions such as:  Who are the characters in our story? Where do they live? Do they have special powers? Is there a bad guy? What problem(s) do the characters run into? How do they solve this problem?  Do they live happily ever after? After finding answers to these questions, the campers came up with the most amazing and fantastical stories! Both camps decided it would be fun to act out the fairy tales on the last day of camp for their parents, friends, and relatives.  Campers quickly got to work on creating costumes, murals, castles, tree houses, mystical animals, etc. Here are the two stories that the campers came up with all on their own:

The Four Princesses and The Evil Witchy-Poo
written by: 9-12 Campers

Once upon a time, there were five beautiful princesses.  The princesses had special powers.  They could heal animals with their lovely princess hats.  They had special animals that lived in their castles.  Over their castles there were talking rainbows!  They also had a mom named Queen Emily.  There was also a mean old witch named Witchy-Poo!  There was a beautiful rainbow diamond in the castle that kept the land beautiful.  The land there were cupcakes that grew on trees, colorful flowers, and different yummy fruits.  One day Witchy-Poo sneaked into the castle to steal the rainbow diamond that kept the land beautiful.  Uni the unicorn used her horn to cast a spell on the witch.  This spelled turned the witch into a lollipop!  Everybody ate the lollipop.  They got their rainbow diamond back forever and the land was beautiful again.  They all lived happily ever after.  The End!

The Best Friends
written by: 1-4 Campers

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful mermaid, a beautiful princess, and four lovely fairies.  The mermaid lived in the ocean, the princess lived in a castle, and the fairies lived in a tree house.  They were all very good friends.  One day they decided to go on vacation to Candyland, but when they left they forgot to lock their doors!  Mr. Mad Monster sneaked into their houses and stole their wands and magical mirrors!  In Candyland the friends met Mrs. Nice the fairy godmother.  Mrs. Nice had many animal friends: two bunnies, a bee, a cat, a bird, and a butterfly.  The animals told Mrs. Nice that Mr. Mad Monster stole their wands and magic mirrors.  The friends ran back home to catch Mr. Mad Monster.  Mr. Mad. Monster tried to runaway, but Mrs. Nice cast a spell on him and turned him into a rock! The friends threw the rock into the ocean and they lived happily ever after.  The End!

Stranded!

Week 3 June 25 – June 29
Ages 3-9 *Campers will be divided into age groups: 3-5 and 6-9

Oh no! Art Sparklers boarded a ship that left them stranded on a desert isle!  With only the materials in our studio, sparklers must find a way to survive through this week of camp!   What will they need? A tent? Fire? Food? A cave? A map of their island? Will they be able to find water to drink? Imagination will ignite as students discover how to survive off of The Art Spark’s art materials. Enroll

Last week marked the first summer camp at The Art Spark of 2012.  Throughout the camp we learned about the important aspects of a town. Many questions were asked, answered, and explored.  What does a town have? Who lives and works there? What’s the best way to build an ATM? How do we create a map of our town? What does a post office need? How can we make a ghost fly? How can we build an oven for the bakery?…and many more! Once we thought about these important questions we began building the things which we believed were the most important, including: the post office, firehouse, jail cell, community pool, bakery, ice cream parlor, bank, pond, park and pet shop! Boy were we busy! Here is a list of some of the art projects we created, and the techniques we used!

1.)  We drew pictures of what we thought our town would look like–with oil pastels and watercolors.
2.)  We made paper mache ice cream cones…complete with acrylic paint, our secret fluff recipe for whip cream, sprinkles, and a pom pon cherry!
3.)  We used fridge boxes (our favorite) to build and create the buildings in our town
4.)  We customized our own stickers.
5.)  We  painted murals to fill the town with.
6.)  We created play money for in the bank.
7.)  And SOOOO much more!

“Just wanted to thank you for pouring your hearts, souls, creativity, hard work, and loveliness into our daughter’s party.  Please thank your helpful crew, too.  It was great to have so many people to make sure the projects went smoothly and the kids were engaged.  My daughter had a blast — one of her favorite parties ever.  Truly, all the children looked like they had a great time and I thought you’d get a kick out of the feedback.  One friend just e-mailed me to say her son said he wants his party with you next time.  And everyone kept complimenting me on how unique and wonderful it was.    The kids were so delighted when they showed their parents what they had made.  I loved how you spoke to all the children and how you made our daughter feel special.  I also appreciated that you tried to learn so many of the kids’ names.  They enjoyed the free play and the projects.  I loved when you asked them questions, too, and allowed them to participate. Nobody ever looked bored or antsy.  In the end, the kids were far from ready to leave — sign of a good party, right?”

Come one! Come all! To the first ever, Art Spark ball! Our studio will be
transformed into an enchanted castle filled with lights, jewels, chandeliers,
and more! Sparklers should come dressed in their favorite prince or princess
costume and ready to party! Sparklers will have the opportunity to make
their own pizza for dinner, magic mirrors, and dance the night away!

Hello Sparklers!

A Valentine has gone missing in The Art Spark’s studio!  Cupid has stolen it and it will be up to the art sparklers to find it!  Clues will lead them on a scavenger hunt around the school.  They will also make their own valentines and enjoy sweets. There are still 10 spots remaining in the 11-1 party! If your child cannot attend this party, please look below for information on our parties at The Spotted Goose in Oakley!

What is a spark?

A spark is the most valuable moment of a child’s creative experience. When children create art in our classroom, they will constantly ignite “sparks”, or ideas. As the sparks develop, your child will:
